Rolling Deep in the Dong
I'm raking in millions...Actually, that's only worth literally 12.5 in US dollars. No joke. About 20,000 dong is worth 1 USD. Like right by where I volunteer in center of Hanoi, there's this ice cream place for 5000 dong. That's 25 cents. As in a quarter. As in, I'm going to eat ice cream like every day. I thought coming here, I would be forced to eat healthy, what with just eating 'clean' food, but how can I resist 25 cent ice cream?!?
Also, this huge bottle of water that's like is only 10,000 dong. As in, so much cheaper than a $3 16oz bottle of water in the US!!!! Like jeezle, I might just have to bring like 50 of those home. Those might be the only things I bring home...
It's hard because I'd find the price for something, then convert it, and I'd be like oh it's only [some ridiculously low number] in US dollars! I gotta stop thinking like that. However, recently I'm getting in the mindset that what with everything being so cheap, I think everything is expensive. Like ohmigosh that's 60,000 dong? That is wayyy too much! (It's actually only 3 dollars) Bus fare is only 5000 dong! That's 25 freaking cents! And a taxi ride is like 5 dollars for like a 30 minute ride. Amazing! Since everything is in thousands though, I have to be extra careful when using the bills and count how many zeros there are- Don't want to be giving out 100,000 dong!
In the rural center yesterday, we mostly did construction and painted on the walls.
It's nice because this is something that will last beyond my time here. It was so freaking hot though and the paint fumes wasn't helping either. Even some of the locals were taking off their shirts!
Volunteer Drama! So meeting some of the French guys, I thought they were quite cool and funny, as the French are known for being charismatic, but the more time I am around them, I realize they are actually quite awful people. They are 23 and they joke around, but they sometimes take it too far to the point of being disrespectful to the Vietnamese culture and people here. One of the French girls, who also are annoyed by them, told me that when they talk in French, they made fun of the disabled children!? They said they were only there to get university credit and not for volunteering. They would sing on the bus where we are told to be quiet. To be fair, not all the French volunteers are like that- actually I like all the them except for those two guys. The Scottie woman who is like our mama bear yelled at them so I think they're scared of her now.
Today, we continued painting and it's looking really good and it's fun to watch the kids play on the repainted equipment.
I may or may not be kidnapping this boy and bring him back to America...
