Aaannnd We're Back

Wow so it’s basically been 3 years since my last blog post...around the same time as my birthday. 3 years?! And while it’s been in the back of my mind to update this (and also because of my mom’s reminders), I got a Google Alert that my Google Site will need to be updated since they were changing platforms. I have a google site? I made a google site? Apparently, I made it back when I was in college!!! This is what it looked like (you can visit it here if you want to):


This made me incredibly nostalgic and it felt out-of-body to read those words I wrote so long ago, about who I was, where I came from and who I wanted to be almost a decade ago. I forgot one of my favorite words used to be indelible which means: making marks that cannot be erased, removed, or washed out; that which is impossible to eliminate, forget, or change. That meaning deeply resonated with me: what I wanted to do with with my life, the purpose I’m trying to define - also probably not too uncommon among millennials. Plus it sounds close to the word ‘edible’ which is obviously about eating and if that isn’t my favorite thing ever then I don’t know what is.

Note: As mentioned, these are recollections of what happened more than 4 (!!) years ago since past Alexia was too lazy to finish blogging. Now my last day in Saigon. I should say this whole time I've been a little stressed trying to plan out how to get my tattoo. I originally planned to get it while I was in Hanoi so my volunteer coordinators can take me to a trustworthy place. But I thought better of it since I'll be swimming etc. It was really important that I get this tattoo when I was in Vietnam - mainly for the story (when I turned 21 and was traveling solo in Vietnam blah blah. I should also point out that now that I'm 25 (!!!) 👀 I also did something for my 25th birthday which I'll keep a secret...for now hehe). Keep on trekkin' Sapa

Started off the weekend by going to a water park..didn't know Hanoi had those! Then I had Nam take me on motorbike in the rain to the bus station for sapa. The sleeping bus was interesting to say the least. They either played Vietnamese opera music or western ecstasy rave music. Thankfully I got the single bed on the way there....(foreshadow!!) The bus picked up people on the way there and made a stop in Lao Cai then finally Sapa! When we finally arrived in the town around 8 in the morning I was so confused because I was supposed to have a you're guide but I didn't see anyone and the local village people kept trying to talk me. Insult there were two exchange students grin Thailand studying in Vietnam and they were confused too. I called the travel agent and he said the the guide is coming soon. After getting picked up and to the hotel, I got my itinerary for my 2 day trek and homestay in the village. I had a nice hotel breakfast and then stayed my trek with 8 other people....

En Route to Kenya

The week before I left, my family had a sunny farewell sendoff barbecue filled with food, laughter and SushiGo! (it’s a card game that you need to play immediately). I couldn’t be more lucky and blessed to have such great family and friends- I am so deeply touched by everyone’s support and prayers. If only the distance wasn’t so big.. but our hearts are bigger. On my way to Kenya, I had a 13 hr flight to Ethiopia. Luckily I had a window seat, and no one sat in the middl. The lady on the aisle seat was reading Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist, which is one of my top favorite books (this was also one of the only three books I brought with me). I was silently freaking out because this book is about fate and destiny, and how if you go after what you truly want, the whole universe conspires with you to make that happen. So maybe this was a basic girl thing of me to be like ohmigosh the universe is sending me this sign!! But I did and it helped cut through the goodbye sadn...
